What is Wiegand Access Control?

Wiegand access control is a system that uses magnetic fields to transfer data from a credential, such as a key card or fob, to a reader. Weigand technology has become a cornerstone in access control systems.

How Does Wiegand Access Control Work:

Wiegand access control system comprises several key components:

  • Credentials: These are typically key cards, fobs, or badges embedded with Wiegand wire. Additionally, each credential contains unique data encoded during manufacturing.
  • Reader: The Wiegand reader includes a coil that generates a magnetic field. When a credential comes into proximity, the magnetic field induces the Wiegand wire to release energy. Consequently, the reader captures and decodes this burst of energy.
  • Control Panel: This is the system’s brain. When the reader captures data from a credential, it sends the information to the control panel. Then, the control panel verifies it against the stored database.
  • Door or Gate Lock: Upon verification, the control panel sends a signal to the locking mechanism. Consequently, the door or gate opens.
